A PRACTICAL HANDMADE PROJECT
Build a Simple Paper Weaving Mat
A woven paper mat explores a repeating pattern at a larger scale than a bookmark. It is a display piece rather than a heat-resistant table mat.

WHAT TO GATHER
Your starting kit.
- Two colors of paper
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Paper adhesive
STEP 01
Prepare the starting piece
Cut a base rectangle and mark a wide border. Draw parallel cutting lines inside it, stopping each line short of the border.
STEP 02
Set out the shape
Fold the base lightly to start the cuts, then open it and check that all slots remain inside the intact outer edge.
STEP 03
Work the first section
Cut contrasting strips slightly longer than the base width. Weave the first over and under the base bands without pulling them tight.
STEP 04
Build and adjust
Weave the next strip in the reverse sequence and repeat. Bring the rows together gently while checking the outer border stays reasonably square.
STEP 05
Finish and check
Secure the ends with paper adhesive, dry flat, and trim excess. Display beneath lightweight dry objects only, away from hot dishes and water.
Before you begin.
What should I check before beginning?
Cut a base rectangle and mark a wide border. Draw parallel cutting lines inside it, stopping each line short of the border.
What is the main practical tip for this project?
A wider border gives the base more strength and is forgiving when a few slots are uneven.
