PAPER WITH A PURPOSE
Fold a Simple Paper Pocket for a Note
A folded paper pocket makes a simple home for a short note, a recipe card, or a handmade bookmark. It is a presentation pocket rather than a postal envelope: the open edges are not designed to protect something in transit. Use a rectangular sheet and let the note itself guide the size. Folding around a practice card helps you leave enough room to remove the contents without bending them.

WHAT TO GATHER
Your starting kit.
- One rectangular sheet of paper
- A practice card matching your finished note
- Paper glue or double-sided paper tape
- A ruler and pencil
STEP 01
Place the note first
Lay the sheet in portrait orientation and place the practice card near the lower half. Leave paper at both sides and above the card. Do a dry fold before trimming; the pocket must accommodate the card plus a little room for your fingers.
STEP 02
Make the side flaps
Fold narrow flaps inward along both long edges. Keep them parallel, using the ruler as a guide. These flaps will join the front and back, so avoid making them so wide that they crowd the card.
STEP 03
Fold up the front
Fold the bottom portion upward to cover most of the card. The remaining paper above it becomes the top flap. Check that the card still slides in and out, then smooth the bottom crease with the back of a spoon.
STEP 04
Join only the sides
Open the front fold and apply a small amount of paper glue or tape to the side flaps where the front will meet them. Refold and press. Keep adhesive away from the inside opening and allow glue to dry before inserting the note.
STEP 05
Finish the top flap
Fold the upper portion down over the pocket. Leave it loose for reuse, or close it with a paper band. Add a geometric border or a small dried leaf only if it will not scratch or stain the contents.
Before you begin.
Can this replace a mailing envelope?
No. Use a suitable postal envelope and follow your postal service requirements. This project is for handing over a note or keeping it in a journal.
What if the card sticks?
Let glue dry fully, then check for adhesive inside the pocket. Start again with a little more clearance rather than pulling hard on the card.
