STRAIGHT STITCHES, SMALL SCRAPS

Hand Sew a Simple Fabric Bookmark

Two small woven fabric strips can become a flat bookmark with a simple visible seam. This version keeps the stitching on the outside and uses no stiff insert, so it is a practical exercise in spacing running stitches. Choose thin, clean fabric and test that its color will not transfer to paper. Keep the finished bookmark free of beads, buttons, or bulky knots.

WHAT TO GATHER

Your starting kit.

  • Two thin woven cotton rectangles, approximately 5 × 18 cm
  • Hand sewing needle and suitable thread
  • Scissors, ruler, and removable fabric marker

STEP 01

Prepare matching rectangles

Cut two equal rectangles from clean thin woven fabric. Check that the colors do not transfer when gently rubbed against a spare white cloth. Avoid thick seams from old garments, loose embellishments, and fabric that sheds heavily.

STEP 02

Align and mark the seam

Place the rectangles wrong sides together with the edges aligned. Mark a line about 8 mm inside each edge using a removable fabric marker tested on scrap. The seam will remain visible; the extra border gives the stitches some room if the edges fray.

STEP 03

Begin with a short thread

Thread a needle with a manageable length and secure the starting end between the layers. Work on a stable surface with good light. Keep needles in a holder when paused and supervise children around sharp tools.

STEP 04

Sew an even border

Use small running stitches along the marked line, passing through both layers. Turn gently at the corners and keep the thread relaxed so the fabric lies flat. Secure the final thread between the layers, then trim the loose end close without cutting the fabric.

STEP 05

Check before using

Remove marking according to its instructions and let the fabric dry completely if cleaning was needed. Trim loose fibers without cutting into the seam. Test the bookmark in a spare book and stop using it if it sheds dye, catches, or creates a bulky ridge.

Before you begin.

Will the raw edges fray?

Some fraying is expected. Use stable woven fabric, leave a generous seam allowance, and trim occasional loose fibers carefully.

Can I add a button?

Keep this bookmark flat. Hard or bulky decorations can press into book pages.
