ANOTHER LIFE FOR A SQUARE
Wrap a Small Box With Reusable Fabric
A fabric square can wrap a small box without tape and can be used again after the gift is opened. Begin with a light cotton scarf or a clean hemmed cloth large enough for the corners to meet. This project is a presentation wrap, not protective packaging or a carrying sling. A practice box helps you learn where the folds need more room before wrapping something fragile or important.

WHAT TO GATHER
Your starting kit.
- One clean square cloth or scarf
- A small sturdy box
- A flat surface
STEP 01
Test the size first
Set the cloth down as a diamond and place the box in the middle. Lift opposite corners to check that they overlap over the box. The remaining corners must also reach each other comfortably. If they barely meet, choose a larger cloth rather than forcing a tight knot.
STEP 02
Fold the first pair
Bring one corner over the box and tuck excess fabric flat against it. Bring the opposite corner across in the other direction. Smooth the cloth with your hands, keeping bulky folds away from delicate contents and avoiding sharp objects beneath the fabric.
STEP 03
Gather the remaining corners
Lift the two side corners toward the top of the box. Fold extra material inward beside the box to create clean sides, then bring the corners together. Keep the box on the table while adjusting; the cloth is not intended to support its weight.
STEP 04
Tie a simple secure knot
Cross the two corners and tie a knot, then adjust the folds so the box sits flat. Test that the wrap stays closed during ordinary handling. Do not attach long loose ties where they could catch, and do not use the knot as a carrying handle.
STEP 05
Explain the reuse
Let the recipient know the cloth is part of the gift or is intended to return for reuse. Untie it gently after opening, fold it, and clean it according to its care label. A simple neutral cloth works for everyday giving without seasonal decorations.
Before you begin.
Can I carry the parcel by the knot?
No. Support the box underneath with your hands. This wrap is decorative presentation, not a tested carrying method.
Does the fabric need to be new?
No. A clean, intact, appropriately sized cloth you already own is a good starting point. Check for snags and follow its care label.
