Create a Simple Book Review Journal Spread

A book review spread can be useful without becoming an assignment. Reserve one page for basic details and another for your own response, leaving space for the thought you want to remember. Use a book you have already finished to test the layout. Once you know which prompts help, repeat only those sections in your next entry.

WHAT TO GATHER

Your starting kit.

  • Notebook or two loose sheets
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Ruler and an optional fine pen

STEP 01

Start with the book details

Write the title, author, and date finished at the top of the first page. Add an edition or format only if you find it useful. Leave a generous margin so the information is easy to spot when you return to the spread.

STEP 02

Make a short summary space

Draw a box for a summary in your own words. Limit yourself to a few sentences about the main subject or premise. You do not need to reconstruct every event, and you can mark private spoilers clearly if you expect to share the page.

STEP 03

Choose three response prompts

On the second page, leave sections for what stayed with you, what you questioned, and who might enjoy the book. Change these prompts to suit what you read. Keep the boxes unequal if one question usually needs more room.

STEP 04

Leave a reference line

Record a page number for a passage you want to revisit, then describe why it mattered in your own words. A reference can be more useful than copying a long passage. Check the edition before relying on a page number later.

STEP 05

Review the layout after use

Fill the spread once before drawing several blank copies. Remove sections that stayed empty and enlarge the one you used most. A quick dated note is enough when you do not feel like making a full review.

Before you begin.

Do I need a rating system?

No. A sentence about your response can say more than a number, and you can omit ratings entirely.

Can this work for nonfiction?

Yes. Replace plot notes with a main idea, a question, and one action or reference you want to return to.
