A PRACTICAL HANDMADE PROJECT
Make a Yearly Book Index
A yearly book index makes completed reading easy to find across several notebooks. Use your own records and keep incomplete information clearly marked.
Start with your materials ↓
WHAT TO GATHER
Your starting kit.
- Notebook
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Your existing reading notes
STEP 01
Prepare the starting piece
Write the year and choose alphabetical or chronological order. Leave extra rows or a spare page if you expect to add entries later.
STEP 02
Set out the shape
Create columns for title, author, date finished, and note location. The location can be a notebook code and page number.
STEP 03
Work the first section
Transfer details from your reading log carefully, checking similar titles. Use the edition information only when you need it to find a passage.
STEP 04
Build and adjust
Add a short subject tag if it will help later browsing. Keep the vocabulary small so related books are not scattered under near-duplicate tags.
STEP 05
Finish and check
Review the index at year end and mark unfinished entries separately. Start the next year with a fresh page rather than overwriting the old record.
Before you begin.
What should I check before beginning?
Write the year and choose alphabetical or chronological order. Leave extra rows or a spare page if you expect to add entries later.
What is the main practical tip for this project?
You can index a book without writing a long review; a reliable note location is enough.
